Know your blood pressure.
The Stroke Association and Rotary International of Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) have now worked together for four years on the 'Know your Blood Pressure' campaign.
In 2006 around 400 blood pressure testing events took place on 7 and 8 April. Thousands of people had their blood pressure checked, and a significant number discovered that their readings were above the normal range.
This, once again, underlines the importance of these events in raising awareness of high blood pressure, and how it can significantly increase the risk of having a stroke.
High blood pressure affects one in three adults in the UK, yet a third don't even know they have it because they never get their blood pressure checked and there are no obvious symptoms.
Home monitor units not only help those already diagnosed with high blood pressure, but can also be beneficial to people suffering from 'white-coat syndrome' — whose blood pressure rises as soon as they see a doctor! — and those who simply want to take more control of their health.

Tests vital to cut UK strokes.
ONE in four people risk strokes due to undiag-nosed high blood pressure.
The Stroke Association examined blood pressure readings for 19,318 people across the UK from 2005.
In the South West, almost 30 per cent were unaware they had high blood pressure, closely followed by East Anglia and the Home Counties.
At the bottom of the table was the North East, on 18 per cent.
The charity urged people to get tested to avoid becoming victim 'to the UK's third biggest killer'.
Director Joe Korner said: 'Every five minutes someone in the UK has a stroke, but over 40 per cent of these could be prevented by the control of high blood pressure.'
It has joined with Rotary to launch testing days across England.
